When practicing witchcraft, protection is vital. While we don’t necessarily need to create spells and properties to protect us, it can be helpful in practicing self-care and warding off any negativity.

A protection spell jar is one that cleanses the space that it is placed in and creates a bubble around it to battle any unwanted energies or poor thought patterns. It is meant to guard your personal, emotional, and spiritual space.

When creating this spell jar, please make sure that you are clear of any negative influences or energies. You should be in a place of calmness and courage when creating this jar, as your emotions impact its ability to protect. If you feel as though you are not in a good environment to create the jar, try taking the ingredients to a safe space, such as outdoors or to a friends, Your safety is number one priority,

Note: It is best to create this spell jar during a full or new moon, or during the waxing moon period. The waxing moon period is when the moon transitions from new moon to full moon—making the moon appear as though it’s growing. You should avoid creating any spell jars during a waning moon, which is the transition from full moon to new moon—making the moon appear as though it’s shrinking.

Materials:

  • Sage

  • Piece of paper and pen

  • Small jar

  • Salt

  • Basil

  • Rosemary

  • Bay

  • Two small protective crystals

    • examples include: calcite, carnelian, clear quartz, citrine, garnet, jade, moonstone, obsidian, onyx, or sunstone

  • Crushed egg shells

  • Black candle

Steps:

  1. Sage all of your materials. This is a vital step in all spell jars, as it cleanses your materials and banishes all negative energies or forces.

  2. Focus on your intentions. What do you want to protect or want protection from? Close your eyes and spend a few minutes visualizing the ideal outcome of said protection.

  3. Take your piece of paper and make sure it’s small enough to fit into the jar when folded. You can cut or tear the paper to make smaller if necessary. On this paper, write down exactly what it is that you want in terms of protection in as little or as much detail as you please. Make sure to sign your name at the bottom of the page.

  4. Fold up your piece of paper and place it inside your jar.

  5. Begin to add your ingredients into the jar in whatever way feels right for you. I personally put it in the order listed (salt, basil, rosemary, bay, crystals, egg shells).

  6. Close up the jar and drip candle wax on top of the lid to seal it shut. Black candles are used for protection, and therefore are recommended for this, but any candle will suffice.

  7. Store somewhere safe and away from direct sunlight, or attach to thread to wear as a necklace.
